2Pac

2pac’s background history shaped his character and beliefs, since his mother, Afeni Shakur was a member of the revolutionary ‘Black Panthers’ which was a civil rights activist group advocating for equality for African Americans. Such a background inspired and affected 2Pac heavily in his lyrics, because hip hop meant something back then, it had a cause.

2Pac and His Mother

The year was 1963 when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous ‘I Have A Dream’ speech at the stairs of Lincoln Memorial in front of 200,000 people and said ” i have a dream that one day little black boys and black girls will be holding hands with little white boys and white girls.”

This however remained still a dream in the ghettos of the 90s for the minority. People were hungry, poor, opportunities were nonexistent, and crime was flourishing.

L.A Ghetto

2Pac recorded this song with his group The O.U.T.L.A.W.Z between 1994 and 1996 but the whole Better Dayz album was released in 2002, six years after Pac’s death.

The content of the song is in its title. They don’t give a fuck about us; and that’s what 2Pac was saying, that those who are in charge, the rich, don’t care about the black poor. Lyrically it is very raw because it describes the physical and mental consequences of being in the margin and justifies criminal behavior as a result of that. Those were the hard times that hip hop had something to say and hip hop meant something!
